Hammock Camping Basics
August 6, 2023 Vol. I Issue 32

Let me tell you my hammock camping origin story…
About 20 years ago I was on a Boy Scout campout with my sons. I was going to try something a little different from my usual Eureka! two-man tent. I had an old US Army shelter half, you know, the kind that was two halves made of stinky canvas that buttoned down the middle. Well, instead of the wooden pole pieces, I was going to run a rope ridgeline between two trees, drape the shelter half over it, and stake it out.
Perfect! Except for one thing…
The campsite that we were assigned to was quite muddy. There were no two trees that were in any high ground. It was already dark on a November evening and I was frustrated. There was no place for me to set up my tent that wasn’t in the soup. I ended up sleeping in my van that night.
The next morning, after emerging from my “tin tipi” I was greeted with, “So, I hear you slept in your van last night.” They said it with such faux moral superiority. They knew I was the “real one” of the group and relished the fact that I slept in the van.
This would NOT happen again!
Before the next outing, I came across a Grand Trunk Traveler’s Hammock. I bought it.
On the next campout, I set up my new hammock. Keep in mind that this was years before hammock camping was anywhere near close to mainstream. I’m always looking for new ways to practice my craft and I was on the cutting edge.
“You gonna sleep in your hammock?”
I haven’t used a tent since.
Why hammocks
Why is hammock camping gaining so much love, you ask? First off, it’s all about comfort. Say goodbye to waking up with a sore back or uneven sleeping spots. Hammocks offer a cradle of relaxation, and it’s like sleeping on a cloud.
Hammock camping is the epitome of versatility. You can set up shop pretty much anywhere – between trees, over rocky terrain, or even above a serene lake. No need to worry about finding that perfect flat tent spot anymore.
Now, here’s a bonus that’ll make Mother Nature proud – minimal impact! Unlike tents that leave a visible mark on the ground, hammocks leave the forest floor untouched, allowing nature to thrive undisturbed. It’s like treading lightly in the great outdoors, and that’s the way we like it!
Choosing the right hammock
Let’s delve into the exciting world of hammock options for camping. You’ve got a trio of contenders vying for your attention – gathered-end, bridge, and camping hammocks.
First up, the classic gathered-end hammock. It’s like the OG of hammock camping, and rightly so! These hammocks are the go-to choice for beginners because they’re easy to set up and don’t break the bank. They’re often made from lightweight materials like nylon or polyester, making them a breeze to carry around on your adventures.
Next, we have the bridge hammocks – a newer player in the game. Bridge hammocks offer a flatter, more bed-like surface, providing a different kind of comfort compared to gathered-end hammocks. They’re designed to minimize the feeling of being cocooned and are great for those who prefer a more spacious sleeping arrangement.
Lastly, camping hammocks are the multi-functional darlings of the hammock world. They come with all the bells and whistles, including built-in bug nets, gear storage pockets, and rainfly options. If convenience and extra features are your jam, camping hammocks got you covered, Fam!
Now, let’s talk about the essential factors to consider when picking your dream hammock. First and foremost, weight capacity – don’t skimp on this one! Make sure the hammock can handle your weight comfortably and with some room to spare. Safety first, right?
Next up, material matters! Lightweight and durable fabrics like parachute nylon or ripstop polyester are the way to go. These materials can take a beating from Mother Nature while keeping your hammock light on your back. Trust us; you don’t want to lug around a heavyweight hammock during your escapades.
And speaking of lugging, let’s talk setup ease. When you’re out in the wild, the last thing you want is to struggle with an overly complicated setup. Look for hammocks with intuitive suspension systems and user-friendly features. Time is precious – spend it swinging in your hammock, not wrestling with the setup.
Now, since we’re all about making your life easier, I’ve got some recommendations for reliable hammock brands and models, especially for the hammock-curious beginners out there. ENO (Eagles Nest Outfitters) and Grand Trunk are well-known for their quality gathered-end hammocks. If you’re interested in bridge hammocks, Warbonnet and Dream Hammock have got some pretty sweet options. And when it comes to camping hammocks, you can’t go wrong with brands like Hennessy Hammock and Kammok.
Remember, finding the perfect hammock is like finding a best friend – it’s all about compatibility and comfort. So take your time, do your research, and soon enough, you’ll have your ideal camping companion hanging around, ready to accompany you on countless adventures.
Essential hammocking gear
Next, we’ll gear up for the ultimate hammock camping experience! You’ve got your hammock, but it’s not a party until you have the essential accessories to keep you cozy and bug-free.
First things first, let’s talk suspension systems. These are the lifelines that hold your hammock between the trees – without them, you’ll be grounded like a teenager on a Saturday night. Look for tree-friendly straps that won’t harm the precious trunks, and adjustable options for that perfect hang. Whoopie slings and webbing are popular choices, so make sure you’re all set with those!
Now, let’s address the buzzing elephant in the room – bugs. When you’re out in the wild, mosquitoes and their pesky friends are bound to crash your camping party. Fear not, though, because bug nets have got your back. These mesh wonders keep the critters at bay, allowing you to sleep soundly without becoming a midnight snack.
And speaking of showers, let’s talk rainfly/tarps. Mother Nature can be unpredictable, and rain is her specialty. Stay dry as a desert with a reliable rainfly/tarp to protect you from those unexpected downpours. No one likes waking up in a waterlogged hammock, right?
Now, let’s take a journey into colder territories. When the temperature drops, proper insulation is the name of the game. Enter underquilts or sleeping pads – these lifesavers provide a much-needed layer of warmth beneath you, keeping those chilly winds at bay. So when winter calls, don’t forget to bring your insulation A-game.
But wait, there’s more! There’s tons of additional gear options to optimize your hammock setup. Gear lofts are like mini storage units for your hammock, keeping your essentials within arm’s reach. Ridgelines are your secret weapon for keeping that perfect hammock sag – it’s all about finding that sweet spot. And gear organizers are the unsung heroes of the hammock world, keeping your belongings organized and preventing the dreaded midnight search for your headlamp.
You see, hammock camping isn’t just about lounging in style; it’s about being prepared and comfortable throughout your journey. So make sure you pack these essential accessories and extra goodies to elevate your hammock game to new heights.
Set up and suspension
Follow these steps, and you’ll be swinging between the trees like a pro in no time.
Step 1: Scout the Perfect Spot
First things first, find yourself a cozy spot with two sturdy anchor points – usually, it’s trees that play this role. Look for healthy, mature trees with a suitable distance between them, about 10 to 15 feet apart. Avoid trees with loose bark or signs of damage – we want you hanging safely, not falling with a thud. Also, look up and check for any dead branches that may fall in windy conditions. They’re called widow-makers for a reason!
Step 2: Get Your Suspension System Ready
Now that you’ve found the dream spot, it’s time to set up your suspension system. Depending on your gear, you’ll either be using tree straps, whoopie slings, or webbing. Loop your suspension around the anchor points, making sure they’re secure and won’t give in under your weight.
Step 3: Attach Your Hammock
Gently attach each end of your hammock to the suspension system using carabiners or other appropriate hardware. Make sure the hammock is centered between the trees, not pulled too tightly. Leave some slack – we’ll get to the ideal sag in a moment.
Step 4: Adjust the Hang Angle
Now comes the art of adjusting the hang angle. Too tight, and you’ll feel like a banana (not fun for sleeping), and too loose, and you might hit the ground when you climb in. The sweet spot is around 30 degrees – it allows you to lie diagonally and achieve a flat, comfortable sleeping position.
Now that you’ve got your hammock securely hanging, let’s talk about suspension systems. Tree straps are the tree-friendly option – they won’t damage the bark and leave the trees unharmed. Plus, they’re easy to set up and adjust, making them a popular choice for many campers.
On the other hand, whoopie slings offer precise adjustability, making it a breeze to find that perfect hang angle. They’re lightweight and compact, ideal for minimalist adventurers. Webbing is another option – sturdy and reliable, but it might cause more wear on the tree bark compared to tree straps.
Now, let’s talk height and sag. The height of your hammock depends on personal preference and the surrounding environment. Some like it low for easy access, while others prefer a higher hang for a more open view. Experiment and find what feels best for you. Personally, I like to be high off the ground.
As for sag, it’s all about finding that Goldilocks zone – not too tight, not too loose, just right. An ideal sag allows your body to lie diagonally in the hammock, distributing your weight more evenly and reducing the dreaded “banana effect.” A good rule of thumb is to aim for 1 to 1.5 feet of sag when you’re lying in the hammock.
Remember, practice makes perfect when it comes to hammock setup. Don’t be afraid to try different hang angles and heights until you discover your sweet spot for the comfiest and most restful sleep under the stars.
Hammock Camping Safety and Leave-No-Trace Principles
Hammock camping is amazing, but we must always keep safety at the forefront of our minds. Here are some crucial tips to ensure a worry-free and secure hammock camping experience.
Weight Limits and Gear Inspection: Before you embark on your hammock camping journey, make sure you know the weight capacity of your hammock. Exceeding weight limits can lead to unfortunate and potentially dangerous surprises. Also, always inspect your gear for wear and tear before every trip. Frayed straps or damaged suspension systems are not your hammock’s best friends, and they certainly won’t make for a pleasant night’s sleep.
Proper Anchor Point Selection: When choosing your anchor points, go for healthy and sturdy trees. Avoid trees with dead or damaged branches that could pose a risk (widow-makers). Ensure the trees are at an appropriate distance from each other to achieve the ideal hang angle without putting undue stress on the hammock or the trees themselves.
Leave-No-Trace (LNT) Principles for Hammock Camping: Nature is our playground, and it’s up to us to play responsibly. Embrace Leave-No-Trace principles specific to hammock camping to minimize our impact on the environment. When setting up your hammock, be mindful of the vegetation around you, and avoid causing any damage. Follow existing paths and campsites to reduce your footprint on the wilderness.
Check out my post about LNT principles HERE
Tree Protection: Trees are our partners in hammock camping, and it’s our responsibility to care for them. Always use tree straps or other tree-friendly suspension systems to protect the bark from damage caused by direct contact with ropes or webbing. Remember, healthy trees mean more hammocking adventures for all of us!
Responsible Waste Disposal: Pack out all your trash and leave the campsite cleaner than you found it. Properly dispose of any waste, and refrain from burning or burying trash. Keep in mind that any food scraps can attract unwanted wildlife, so store your food securely and away from your sleeping area.
Campfire Safety: If campfires are permitted, follow local regulations and safety guidelines. Keep fires small and contained, and ensure they are completely extinguished before leaving the campsite or heading to bed.
Wildlife Awareness: Respect wildlife and observe from a safe distance. Never feed wild animals, as this can disrupt their natural behavior and lead to dependence on humans.
By adhering to these safety guidelines and Leave-No-Trace principles, we can enjoy the beauty of nature without leaving a negative impact. Remember, we’re all part of a larger community of outdoor enthusiasts, and it’s our collective responsibility to protect and preserve our beloved wilderness. So let’s spread the hammock love while being mindful of the environment that provides us with so much joy and serenity.
Common Challenges
Hammock camping may be a slice of paradise, but let’s be real – Mother Nature can throw some curveballs our way. But fear not, because we’ve got you covered with solutions to tackle those common challenges and make your hammock camping experience a breeze.
Cold Weather Woes: When the temperature drops, staying warm becomes priority number one. Enter insulation – the secret to beating the cold. Underquilts or sleeping pads are your best friends here. They create a cozy layer of insulation beneath your hammock, keeping the chilly winds at bay. Pro tip: consider using a top quilt or sleeping bag specifically designed for hammock use to lock in that precious body heat.
Rainy Days and Soggy Nights: Rain showers can be a bummer, but with the right gear, you’ll stay dry. Set up a reliable rainfly/tarp above your hammock to create a waterproof fortress. Make sure it’s properly tensioned and angled to shed water efficiently. Pro tip: opt for a larger rainfly to provide extra protection from wind-driven rain.
Battling Bugs: Insects can be pesky little party crashers. Keep them at bay with a bug net. Mosquitoes and gnats will be left scratching their heads while you snooze peacefully in your cocoon of protection. Pro tip: consider a hammock with an integrated bug net for a hassle-free setup.
Location, Location, Location: Choosing the right camping spot can make or break your hammock camping experience. Look for a site that’s relatively flat, free from rocks and roots that can poke you in the night. Stay away from low-lying areas prone to pooling water during rainstorms. Pro tip: scout the area during the day to identify potential hazards or branches that could come crashing down.
Windy Weather Wisdom: Windy days can make hammock camping feel like a wild ride. Position your hammock perpendicular to the prevailing wind to reduce swaying. Set up a windbreak, such as a tarp or natural barrier, to shield yourself from gusts. Pro tip: a hammock sock or weather shield can offer additional protection from wind and cold.
Keeping Warm and Toasty: Insulation isn’t just for cold weather; it’s also your ally on chilly nights. Placing a reflective insulation blanket between your hammock layers can help retain body heat, creating a cozy cocoon. Pro tip: warm up your sleeping bag or quilt before getting in for added comfort.
Mindful Hammock Hangs: Last but not least, be mindful of where you set up your hammock. Avoid hanging directly over fragile vegetation, as your weight can cause damage. Look for sturdy trees with a safe distance between them, ensuring a secure hang. Pro tip: try to position your hammock to enjoy stunning views or to catch the sunrise for an unforgettable start to your day.
With these savvy solutions and a bit of preparation, you’ll be able to conquer any challenge Mother Nature throws your way. So, let the adventure unfold, and embrace the joys of hammock camping with confidence. Remember, every challenge is an opportunity for growth, and with each camping trip, you’ll refine your skills and become a true hammock camping connoisseur.
Tips for a Restful Night’s Sleep
Ah, the sweet serenade of a restful night’s sleep in a hammock – it’s a dream we all wish to embrace. Let’s dive into some tips and tricks to make that dream a reality!
Find Your Sweet Spot: Experiment with different sleeping positions in your hammock to discover what works best for you. Most campers find that lying diagonally across the hammock is the key to a comfortable and flat sleeping surface. Avoid lying straight down the center – it might give you that infamous “banana” feeling.
Snooze Aids for Sweet Dreams: If you’re having trouble nodding off, a few sleep aids can work wonders. Consider bringing a small travel pillow to support your head and neck. Eye masks and earplugs can help block out any light or noise that might disrupt your slumber. And hey, a gentle sway or rocking motion can be oh-so-soothing and lull you into dreamland. A little nosh never hurts, as well *wink*
Embrace the Back-Pain Relief: For those with back pain, hammock camping might be a godsend. The gentle curve of the hammock molds to your body, promoting a natural alignment of the spine. This means less pressure on your back and joints, translating to a more comfortable and pain-free night’s sleep.
Achieving Hammock Zen for Back Health: To optimize your sleep posture, lie diagonally in the hammock, allowing your body to lay flatter reducing any curvature on your back. Avoid sleeping in a curled position – stretching out is the way to go. Add that extra touch of comfort with a lumbar support pillow or an underquilt for added insulation and cushioning.
First-Time Hammock Campers: For those venturing into the hammock camping realm for the first time, welcome! It’s normal to experience some unique sensations. You might feel a gentle sway or a floating sensation – embrace it! Let yourself relax and enjoy the feeling of being cradled by nature. Trust me; it won’t be long before you fall in love with the hammock life.
The Comfort of Minimalism: One of the beauties of hammock camping is the simplicity of it all. Embrace the minimalist lifestyle, free from clunky tent poles and inflatable mattresses. You’ll find that less is more – and that means more space in your backpack for other essential gear or tasty campfire treats.
The Magic of Serenity: Remember, hammock camping is not just about catching some z’s; it’s a holistic experience of connection with nature. The gentle sway, the rustling leaves, and the night sky above – it all comes together to create a magical serenity that’s hard to replicate in a traditional tent. Soak it all in and let nature’s embrace lull you into a peaceful sleep.
With these tips in your hammock-camping arsenal, you’ll be ready to drift off into dreamland with ease. Whether you’re seeking back pain relief or embracing the allure of nature’s embrace, hammock camping promises a restful slumber like no other. So, snuggle up, close your eyes, and let the hammock rock you into a blissful night’s sleep under the stars.
